Career History: Owen Ryan Associates, NY, NY (1984 - Present)

Consultant. Built marketing consulting practice from scratch. Worked with some of America's best-known executives. Attracted important corporate and brand marketing, advertising, creative, sales promo and strategy development assignments from top management of blue chip companies such as Johnson & Johnson, IBM, Kraft Foods and Citibank.

Typical assignments included:

Safeway Stores, Inc. 2001- Current. Hired by Chief Marketing Officer of this $34 billion, 1,900 store retailer to develop and help implement innovative new product initiatives, selling programs, energize in-store promotion and loyalty programs, and identify external non-grocery product and retailer "partnering relationships" to help Safeway more effectively respond to serious volume loss caused by shopper erosion to discount super centers such as Wal-Mart. Helped management identify innovative strategies and tactics to fully maximize and monetize 35 million loyalty card users and 1.5 billion annual transaction base. Re-branded and re-launched Safeway's strategic-partnership programs with retailers such as Nordstrom's, and big box retailers such as Home Depot, Circuit City, etc. (Safeway's "Valued Connections" program) and advised on joint venture relationships with non-grocery, financial services companies.

Anheuser-Busch, Inc. (1995-2000) Hired to advise company management on brand-critical communications issues surrounding a threatened Teamster and AFL/CIO national boycott of Budweiser. (At the time I was hired, a wildcat walkout had just occurred and was spreading to other cities.) Teamsters at AB breweries were shutting down lines, walking off the job, issuing press releases critical of Budweiser quality, wearing "Boycott Bud" T-shirts in TV news reports. A serious problem with huge downside volume loss implications for Bud brand and AB stock price. I organized and led a brand communications crisis team, quickly developed a wide range of turnkey brand and corporate communications solutions to target any foreseeable brand, union, trade or consumer eventuality. (12 separate print trade campaigns, 166 ads, 12 consumer programs including print, radio, POP and TV.) Additional: extensive new product development work, branded and did launch advertising for high-end specialty beers. Re-conceptualized and re- designed primary annual research instrument used to monitor and quantify changes in user attitudes toward various company-owned, and competitive, brands.

Coca-Cola Company. (1985) Hired by Coke CEO to advise on botched introduction of "New" Coke. Prepared position papers, proposed alternative PR and promo responses to core Coca-Cola loyalists. Later hired by VP, New Products to join confidential "new" Coke re-launch team.

Education: High School Dropout, but have lectured on new product development, marketing and business strategy at Columbia, NYU and Harvard Business Schools
